Roseburia

Roseburia is a genus of motile, butyrate-producing bacteria in the family Lachnospiraceae (phylum Bacillota, formerly Firmicutes), with R. intestinalis and R. hominis among the best-studied species. Roseburia ferments dietary fibre, particularly resistant starch and beta-glucan from whole grains, and contributes to colonic butyrate production alongside Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Reduced Roseburia abundance has been reported in cohorts of inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer, and the genus is often discussed as a candidate next-generation probiotic. The 2017 Tamanai-Shacoori review, "Roseburia spp.: a marker of health?", summarised its proposed role as an indicator of gut homeostasis. Diet-intervention studies show responsiveness to whole-grain and high-fibre patterns.
