Vitamin C for Muscles and Bones: Strong in the Lab, Thin in People

Key Insight

Evidence that vitamin C strengthens muscles, bones or tendons in people is still thin; most of the support comes from lab and animal work.

The body needs vitamin C to make collagen, the material that holds tendons and bones together. A new review gathered what is known about vitamin C and muscles, bones and tendons. Its verdict: the best evidence comes from cell and animal experiments. Direct evidence from studies in people remains limited.

The human studies it describes point in different directions. In one trial, 336 adults with a broken forearm near the wrist were chosen at random to take 500 milligrams of vitamin C a day or a dummy pill. After 50 days, their fractures healed no better. In older men doing 12 weeks of strength training, high doses of vitamin C plus vitamin E went along with smaller gains in lean mass, mostly muscle. Yet in older women with age-related muscle loss and low vitamin C, the same combination increased muscle and strength compared with a dummy pill.

Many studies tested blends of several nutrients, so the part played by vitamin C alone stays unclear. The review is a descriptive overview and did not pool the numbers itself. The authors also note that too much vitamin C can upset the stomach and may favor kidney stones in susceptible people.
