Curcumin Shields Neural Stem Cells From Oxidative Stress in a Dish

Graded Preliminarycell culture experiments in a single neural stem cell line with no animal or human testing, which caps the strength of the evidence.

Cell, tissue or computational study. Not evidence about people yet, which is why the grade is capped at Preliminary.

Key Insight

This study suggests curcumin's brain benefits may run through antioxidant and Wnt signaling effects.

Curcumin, the yellow compound in turmeric, helped lab-grown neural stem cells survive oxidative stress and pushed them toward becoming neurons. It worked by damping down reactive oxygen species and switching on the Wnt3α signaling pathway. For anyone taking curcumin for brain health, this offers a possible mechanism behind the hype. But this was cells in a dish, not animals or people, so it says nothing yet about real brains.
